2024 PENS Call for Abstracts for Poster Presentation

Submission Deadline: December 1, 2023

The Research Committee of the Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society (PENS) invites you to develop an abstract to be considered for poster presentation at the PENS National Conference, scheduled for April 17-20, 2024 in St. Louis, Missouri. Step up your game by submitting an abstract. All accepted abstracts will be published in an online issue of Journal of Pediatric Nursing! Abstracts are being solicited in the following four categories (descriptions below):

  • Nursing Research
  • Case Presentation
  • Product-Based Research
  • Informational

    The Research Committee will be soliciting abstracts from the nursing research poster category to be presented as podium presentations in the Research General Session at the conference. If you are submitting an abstract under the nursing research category and are interested in a podium presentation, please indicate this on your application.

      Who can submit a poster?

      You (or you and a team). One of the authors must be a member of PENS at the time of abstract submission.

      Is there a special format that I must use to write my abstract?

      Yes. See the abstract guidelines below. Please use the listed headings in the correct order. Previous PENS poster abstracts in all four categories are available online in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing if you would like to see an example.

      What happens if my abstract is accepted for poster presentation?

      Poster specifications and criteria for poster judging will be included in your acceptance letter. Authors of accepted abstracts will display a poster at the National Conference, April 19-22, 2023. Submitting an abstract signifies your commitment to present a poster should it be accepted.

      What happens if my abstract is accepted for podium presentation?

      Presentation specifications will be included in your acceptance letter. Authors of accepted abstracts will give a podium presentation at the National Conference in April 17-20, 2024. Submitting an abstract, and indicating you are interested in a podium presentation, signifies your commitment to give an oral presentation should your abstract be accepted.

      What is the submission deadline?

      Submission Guidelines

      1. One of the authors of the poster must be a member of PENS at the time of submission.
      2. Select an abstract category and follow the associated abstract guidelines.
      3. Abstracts must be submitted online. If you see a “thank you” message immediately after submitting your abstract, it has been successfully submitted. If you don’t see the thank you message, contact Candice Miller at [email protected] to confirm receipt of your submission.
      4. Since reviews are blinded, please do not include any identifying information in the body of the abstract.
      5. All abstracts must be received by December 1, 2023.
      6. Eight Conference Reimbursement Scholarships (up to $1,000.00 of conference expenses reimbursed) are available for accepted poster authors by application only. Applications open with conference registration.

      Abstract Guidelines

      The PENS Conference Planning Committee (CPC) strongly encourages presentations focused on 1) advanced pharmacology which covers new treatment methodologies, and 2) late-breaking, cutting-edge advanced practice sessions. The suggested topics list is generated from requests from previous conference attendees and the PENS membership, and is not meant to exclude topics that are not listed.

      Nursing Research (poster or podium presentation)

      Research abstracts describe original research or evidence-based practice projects.

      General Format

      • Adolescent care in Diabetes
      • Not to exceed 350 words
      • 12-point font size
      • Title—in Title Case

      Body of Abstract (use these headings)

      • Background (brief description of what is known about research question or what prompted you to do an Evidence-Based Practice [EBP] or Quality Improvement [QI] project)
      • Aims (purpose of study or EBP/QI project)
      • Methods (design/study protocol or describe steps to EBP/QI project)
      • Results (synopsis of data)
      • Conclusions (summary of findings)
      • Clinical Implications (including relevance to pediatric endocrinology nursing practice)

      Case Presentation

      Abstracts of case presentations are an analysis of a particular clinical case used as a basis for drawing conclusions in similar situations.

      General Format

      • Not to exceed 350 words
      • 12-point font size
      • Title—in Title Case

      Body of Abstract (use these headings)

      • Patient Demographics
      • Clinical Presentation
      • Relevant Past History (may include relevant family history)
      • Evaluation (studies/assessment)
      • Interventions (physiologic or psychosocial)
      • Discussion/Recommendations (including relevance to pediatric endocrinology nursing practice)

      Product-Based Research

      Product-based research abstracts are authored by industry representatives, or are commercially sponsored, to disseminate research related to products relevant to the pediatric endocrinology nursing community.

      General Format

      • Not to exceed 350 words
      • 12-point font size
      • Title—in Title Case

      Body of Abstract (use these headings)

      • Background (brief description of what is known about research question)
      • Aims (purpose of study)
      • Methods (design/study protocol)

      Informational

      Informational posters are developed for the benefit of imparting specific knowledge concerning a topic of interest.

      General Format

      • Not to exceed 350 words
      • 12-point font size
      • Title—in Title Case

      Body of Abstract (use these headings)

      • Background
      • Purpose
      • Description of topic (e.g., disorder, research or clinical practice methodology, nursing intervention, project, or resource evaluation [may include a literature review])
      • Clinical Implications (including relevance to pediatric endocrinology nursing practice)

      Do not include references in your abstract.

      Include references and a disclosure statement of any conflicts of interest on the posters.
